It's often very subtle, that first hint of fall. A few brave leaves dare to show a change in color...if you don't look closely, you don't even see those leaves of orange and yellow, hiding amongst the green. A few chilly nights, some cool and rainy days...and it happens. Fall smacks you between the eyes and the show is on. So many trees, so many colors!! This rivals spring, this dazzling display that Mother Nature puts on each year...the final fireworks before a long and much needed nap. My favorites are the maples, but there are some wonderful oaks...there are too many to name...and they are not all trees. Lots of shrubs put on quite a display before shedding their leaves as they wait for winter. Beautyberry, Itea, Nandina...color, color, everywhere! The crisp snap in the air, like a tart, firm apple. The smell of wood burning in the fireplace...lending the scent to the outside air. Birds and squirrels hurriedly looking for food, and storage places to hide the bounty away for the winter. Everything is so alive, just as it prepares to go to sleep. Is it any wonder that it's my favorite season?

Mine, too! I just love the crisp, cool mornings and the abundant colors all around. Now if only I could figure out a way to make the leaves disappear without effort... ;-)
