A couple of days have passed since George Carlin slipped out of the arena and left us wanting more. I have spent some time on You Tube, looking at both old and recent footage...and reading comments by those viewing. Not sure how Carlin would have reacted, but someone said they were glad he was dead. I was struck by how fundamentally callous and horrific this statement was. Did you disagree with his views on religion? Politics? Language? Are any of those reasons to wish another human dead?
I can understand wanting someone like Hitler to be gone, an Idi Amin, a Stalin for that matter. But to be glad that George Carlin is dead? I've noted before that something seems to have so divided us that discourse and civility are no longer possible. You don't agree with me? (bang)Now I've shut you up! How do you like that?? Are we no longer a civilized society? Can we not discuss our disagreements, agree to disagree? What happened to opinion? And note, an opinion is just that...it is what an individual believes and that opinion they are entitled to. We seem unable to tolerate any opinion other than our own. And that's quite a sad comment on our society.
"I expect you to show me tolerance; however, I do not have to extend the same courtesy to you." Seems that's just another reason why we seem unable to get along with other countries...we cannot even get along with each other.
I don't have an answer, I'm not sure anyone does...but I'd like to ask that person..."What the heck did Carlin ever do to you?" He made me laugh, he made me think. And there just aren't many people who do that...who can make us laugh and cause us to question the absurd in life. I'm gonna miss you George...
